Visit Mont Saint-Michel
Called the "Wonder of the West," and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mont Saint-Michel rises at the heart of a vast bay, swept by the largest tides in Europe. According to legend, it was at the request of the Archangel Saint Michael, “protector of the Universal Church and Prince of the Celestial Militia,” that Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, built and consecrated the first church in the year 709. The pre-Romanesque church was erected before the year 1000. However, it was in the 13th century, after the conquest of Normandy, that King Philip Augustus began the construction of the Gothic complex, still referred to today as “the wonder.” The Mont Abbey represents the masterpiece that the Christianized Norman invaders created by incorporating the codes and principles of Christian religious architecture in an original way: a testament to their integration into this new civilization, by creating a mystical place that reflects their faith and craftsmanship. Inscribed in 1979 as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mont Saint-Michel is the most visited French site outside of Île-de-France, attracting 2.5 million visitors annually. Like Rome and Santiago de Compostela, it has been for centuries a major pilgrimage site in Europe, particularly for pilgrims from Northern Europe. Learn more about Mont Saint-Michel.
