What to see from the campsite: The Town of Dol-de-Bretagne
Located at the gateway to Brittany, the former episcopal city of Dol, halfway between Saint-Malo and Mont Saint-Michel, offers visitors its architectural treasures. Once built on the edge of a cliff still battered by the waves in the 10th century, Dol-de-Bretagne overlooked the sea. Later becoming one of the first dioceses of Brittany, Dol became a pilgrimage site before being invaded in 1014 by the Vikings, led by Olaf Haraldsson, King of Norway, who came to support the Duke of Normandy. In 1064, the Normans under Duke William laid siege to the town. This attack is depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry.
The Legendary Cathedral of Dol de Bretagne
The Saint-Samson Cathedral, a gem of Breton Gothic architecture, was built at the beginning of the 13th century. It is a fine example of Anglo-Norman architecture and a rare testimony to Breton architecture of that time. Its imposing exterior contrasts with its elegance and simplicity on the inside. If you want to learn more, the Cathédraloscope, located in the center of the village, will provide information on cathedral construction across Europe.
