Discovering Cap d'Erquy
Cap d'Erquy is one of the must-visit sites in the Côtes-d'Armor. The landscape is a mix of cliffs and pink sandstone rocks, as well as wild heathland and pine forests, all enhanced by an emerald sea and wild beaches. Some remnants remind visitors that this is a historically rich place: cannonball furnace, guardhouse, old quarries, customs officers’ path… The pink sandstone of Cap d'Erquy – which should not be confused with pink granite, formed from the cooling of magma – is the result of the layering of sand deposits, dating back 470 million years. Its pink color is due to the presence of iron oxide. The pink sandstone is also a silica-rich rock known for its hardness. This characteristic made it a prized material, especially in the early 20th century, for construction and street paving. Visitors are sure to discover the old pink sandstone quarries here, the "Blue Lakes". These are the result of pink sandstone extraction from the cliffs overlooking the port south of Cap d'Erquy. One is also drawn to the wild beaches lining Cap d'Erquy: the beaches of Lourtuais, Portuais, and Guen. These beaches are even more alluring because they are bordered by turquoise waters and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The beaches of Cap d'Erquy, particularly serene, are perfect for family walks, as well as water sports or outdoor activities.
