History of a Medieval Castle in Brittany
Welcome to Guildo Castle, a remarkable historical site to visit in the Côtes-d’Armor! The castle is located in the small commune of Créhen, near Dinard and Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer. Situated between the Arguenon River and the English Channel coast, this monument spans 5 hectares within a beautifully preserved natural environment. A visit to the castle offers a chance to explore the surprising flora and fauna it shelters. Above all, it unveils a building from another era and its rich past. The history of Guildo Castle has been shaped by several significant events:
- This fortress in Créhen was built in the 12th century on a rocky spur overlooking the Arguenon estuary.
- Demolished and then rebuilt in stone, it underwent major modifications in the 13th century. A chapel, a seigneurial residence, and other structures were organized around a courtyard. At the same time, it was redesigned to provide a clear view of the sea.
- In the 14th century, the first stone castle in the Côtes-d’Armor was destroyed during the War of Breton Succession and abandoned for some time.
- At the end of the 14th century, renovations began! The owners of the time started constructing a large hall, service buildings, a kitchen, a chapel, and residential quarters. The courtyard was redesigned as a single space, complemented by a central cistern. This enclosure is the only one still standing today.
- Guildo Castle reached its peak in the 15th century thanks to Françoise de Dinan, the wife of Gilles de Bretagne, brother of Duke Francis I. She enhanced and beautified the site with a new great hall, a blacksmith’s forge, stables, and new spiral stair turrets.
- The Franco-Breton war at the end of the 15th century left the castle completely in ruins. It never regained its former glory.
- Abandoned in the 17th century, Guildo Castle was used for agriculture and as a stone quarry until the 20th century.
Although the site is in ruins, its remains bear witness to its unique architecture. Not to mention the panoramic view it offers of the port and the ocean. For these reasons, it was listed as a historical monument in 1951.
Restored in 2021, this exceptional fortress is now open to the public. It awaits you during your holidays in western France!
